Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are a manmade structure that is designed and put in place to support and/or hold back land, soil or form of earthen material. These walls are typically constructed in areas where the land slopes or has an unpractical or dangerous layout.

Another reason home and business owners rely upon constructed landscape walls is to blend the structure itself with the lawn, shrubs or planting beds. Without these mostly decorative retaining type walls, there would often be unsightly bland or blank areas of the structure visible. Often the goal is to also hide entry points, wire, piping and meters for a variety of services such as electrical, plumbing, cable, internet and other services. With the options and products available home and business owners can always find a solution that will improve and enhance the appearance of their property.

This type of wall might be constructed for one or any combination of the following reasons:

Improve water drainage
Hide utility, irrigation or drain pipe
Improve the appearance of the property
Provision of planting beds
Alter the terrain of the land
Create an outdoor garden area

Today these walls are increasing in popularity because they offer home and business owners the opportunity to cover construction eyesores while showcasing beautiful stonework and other decorative materials.

There are 4 primary types of walls that are popular today:

Gravity Wall
The most popular wall in landscaping, the gravity type wall uses the weight of the wall itself for holding the ground and everything in place. A gravity-type wall also provides the largest selection for building materials such as manufactured decorative stones, pavers, bricks and unmortared stone.

Cantilevered Wall
A concrete or masonry wall with implemented reinforcement in the form of rebar within the wall itself. This steel bar is often used to also anchor the wall to a concrete slab, foundation or footing below.

Anchored Wall
This type of wall allows versatility of the exposed view while being secured by anchors driven into the earth and connected by specialized cables or strips.

Sheet Piling Wall
This type of wall is typically made of reinforced wood, steel or vinyl and driven directly into the earth below.
